My 8th grade class did a unit on Vincent van Gogh and Post-Impressionist landscapes. They had to address foreground, middle ground, and background, and they used oil-pastels in a post-impressionist style.
For the protrait project, I challenged my students to try Micrography to achieve value in their images. It is using text (handwriting) to achieve value. Whether that is by overlapping words, and/or bolding their text. They did a fabulous job!
Students did a portrait project based on an emotional image. They used the griding method to achieve correct proportions, then used graphite to achieve value in their images.
Students created a mandala design that represented them visually. Some students actually painted on a old vinyl record using acrylic paints, and others used colored pencil on paper. Students were able to apply their own understanding of radial balance.
Students were given proverbs or nursery rhymes to illustrate. They created original illustrations using acrylic paints. Some of the students were definitely thinking outside of the box! Check out the results.
October 2008. Antelope View art students created designs on scratch board by utilizing hatching and cross hatching techniques. They had the option of black on gold or black on white. Students were able to experiment with a new subtractive art form, and recall past lessons on the element of art: Value. This project also helped to refine observational drawing skills.
